Terms of use
Short, because there is not much to agree to. Read the two boxes if you read nothing else.
What you may do
You may read the manuscript without an account. If you sign in, you may add exactly one word per day, in the typeface you choose, for as many of the thirty days as you want to. Words append in the order they arrive. There is no editing, no reordering, and no plan.
A submission is one word, optionally carrying one trailing punctuation mark. Words are checked against a published blocklist before they are accepted.
Your word is permanent
A word you add cannot be edited, deleted, or withdrawn — not by you, not by us, not later. There is no undo. Permanence is the point of the piece rather than a limitation of it, and you should decide your word knowing that.
You may delete your account at any time — see the privacy policy for what it does and how to ask. That removes your email address and detaches your name from your words. It does not remove your words. They stay in the manuscript, unattributed.
The single exception is moderation. A word can be hidden if it is being used to harm a specific person. Hiding leaves the row in place, renders a visible gap in the text, and is recorded in the removal log. We do not quietly rewrite the record.
What happens to the text
On 30 November 2026 at 23:59:59 UTC the manuscript is sealed. The sealed text is published under CC BY-SA 4.0, attributed to “the participants of Novel Novel, November 2026”.
Anyone may republish, print, or remix it as long as they credit the crowd and share alike. Nobody — including us — can enclose it. By adding a word you licence it on those terms, and you cannot withdraw it from the collective work afterwards.
The full attribution data, including which day each word was written and the typeface it was set in, is published with the archive.
If a printed edition is ever made
We may one day produce a printed edition of a sealed manuscript, and we may charge for it — to cover printing, or to fund the work. If we do, three things hold.
You may be credited, and you are not paid. There is no fee, no royalty, and no revenue share for contributors. The manuscript as a whole is always credited to its participants — the licence requires that of us and of anybody else who prints it. Whether your individual name appears in any particular edition is not something we can promise: a printed book fixes its list at one moment, and people delete accounts, change names, and detach themselves from their words. If that is not a trade you want to make, the time to decide is before you add a word, which is why this is written here rather than announced afterwards.
The text stays free, permanently. The complete manuscript remains published and downloadable at no cost, in full, for as long as this project exists. A book would be an object, never the way to read the work. If buying one ever became the good way to read it, we would have enclosed the thing we promised not to enclose.
We get no exclusive right to do this. The licence above lets anybody print and sell this text, using the same archive we would use. We are not reserving anything for ourselves — we could not, and would not want to.
Accounts and conduct
Sign-in is OAuth through Google, Discord, or GitHub. One account per person. Using multiple accounts to take more than one word a day, or automating submissions, defeats the only rule the piece has, and those accounts are suspended.
We may suspend an account for sustained attempts to get harmful words past the blocklist. We do not moderate words for quality, taste, or agreement with the text around them.
No warranty
This is an art project that runs for thirty days and is then an archive. It is provided as it is, with no guarantee of availability. If it breaks during November we will say so plainly in the run log rather than pretend otherwise.
